Stuart meets students concerned about the environment

Stuart recently met with the ‘Global Warriors’ group at St Mary’s school in Menston.

The ‘Global Warriors’ are a group of students from all years in the school who aim to make the school more environmentally friendly, discuss and educate on global issues in the school and work alongside charities such as FairTrade to help do all they can to make a difference to the environment.

Stuart said: “It was such a pleasure to meet such politically engaged youngsters and hear about their efforts to protect our environment. I spoke to the students about the Government’s 25 Year Plan for the Environment and all the steps being taken to reduce the damage to the environment, including the plastic bag charge and food waste reduction scheme and also steps taken to increase renewables and reduce emissions.

The students also wanted to talk about what they could do more locally, and I was pleased to share a few local initiatives and personal suggestions with them, such as the Great British Spring Clean taking place locally on Saturday 30 March. For those interested in contributing, the Horsforth Community Group have organised their clean up event to take place on this day and they are also encouraging everyone who wants to contribute to tidy their own area and upload the photos to the Community Groups Facebook page.

We also discussed the personal steps that can be taken concerning the impact of animal produce, food waste and the fashion production industry on the environment and it was just absolutely fantastic to meet so many concerned young environmental enthusiasts.”
