Stuart Andrew MP has welcomed the announcement that a new Airport Parkway station will be built at Leeds Bradford Airport. This will not only improve access to domestic and international flights for businesses and tourists, but take some pressure from already overcrowded road links to the airport.
This would be a major step towards:
- boosting economic growth in Leeds
- preparing for the increase in domestic flights to Leeds from Heathrow following the third runway announcement
- reducing congestion for local residents and strengthening the case against an additional link road to the airport
- providing a regular and efficient service
“This news is at least a step forward for those of us that thinks Leeds needs to make bold decisions on its transport provision to continue to be an engine for economic growth. I am glad that the decision has been taken to use the hard fought for £173.5 million grant from government to lay the cornerstone for the future of transport in Leeds.
Whilst I would like to see a fully integrated transport system for Leeds, this airport rail station is a step towards that. I've long argued that a rail link will have incredible benefits for our region, city and our communities. Whilst this is not the link I hoped for, this Parkway is at least a start and will mitigate current problems of congestion and overcrowding and open up new opportunities to optimise our economic potential.
I am also pleased to see mentions of two other existing stations in my constituency. We must look at improving access to our existing stations and making them easier to use. This includes improving the parking facilities at Horsforth which are totally inadequate causing all sorts of issues for local residents, expanding New Pudsey and exploring the creation of a park and ride. We must encourage passengers away from the roads and onto the railways to ease congestion. ”
Stuart has long campaigned for the creation of a rail link to Leeds Bradford Airport, repeatedly raising this directly with Ministers through questions in the house and has lobbied Leeds City Council that this money should be spent on a vital airport link.
The part funding of the station through the £173.5 million of Department of Transport money is a big boost to the beginnings of a fully integrated transport system. Stuart was commended at Transport Questions in the House by Rail Minister Paul Maynard on being instrumental in securing this money to be spent on transport in Leeds.
